Nothing is imposible in New York
Bell, Book & Candle is an interesting New York restaurant, located in the West Village, known for its awesome urban garden right on the roof of the building. The chef, John Mooney, makes his dishes with all kind of local organic produce that he grows himself in 60 aeroponic towers placed on the roof. All the menus he offers are seasonal and vary accordingly. Although inspired by the cooking traditions of different regions of America, the menu is based mainly on the blend of contemporary culinary cultures, always looking for an eclectic and original touch.
The dining room: three spaces, three atmospheres
Carefully decorated, the dining area is divided into three distinct spaces: a main dining room overlooking the kitchen, a rear dining with a relaxed and peaceful ambience and a bar area for snacks and drinks. The restaurant, opened in February 2010, gets its name from Richard Quine’s film Bell, Book & Candle (1958).
The Garden: Ecology in the air
The garden operates on a new technology called Garden Tower, a vertical aeroponic growing system that allows you to use the roof of a large building as a garden. Otherwise it would be impossible, because the floor could not support the weight of the earth needed to keep a conventional garden. John Mooney has over 60 white towers with their own reserve water supply at the bases, as well as a timer that sprays the roots of plants every 12 minutes, approx. Seeds are sowed into openings in the main column of the towers. According to the chef himself, in his garden you can grow all kinds of vegetables (eggplant, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers …) and herbs; except for underground vegetables, such as onions or carrots. Undoubtedly, in New York nothing is impossible.
